Obra maestra del drama isabelino, la tragedia del príncipe Hamlet es el relato de una venganza escenificada paso a paso, pues el príncipe sabe lo que hace aunque finge continuamente estar ensimismado y desconectado de lo que sucede a su alrededor. Por eso, porque sabe, duda. Sin embargo, es más fuerte el impulso que lo arrastra a matar a desconocidos y parientes, a inocentes o culpables, y hasta a causar la muerte de la mujer que ama. En la obra asistimos prácticamente a un negativo del amor palpamos hasta qué punto el amor se sustenta en el perdón y hasta dónde destruye si éste no existe, a una conspiración que ocurre dentro de la cabeza del protagonista y de cuyos vaivenes resulta la acción dramática. Hamlet actuará solo, implacable y sin cómplices. Los candidatos a víctimas de su furia recelan, presienten, casi nada comprenden. Todos, menos Ofelia intentan alejar a Hamlet. No lo consiguen. Y el príncipe va destruyendo cuanto se le acerca y acaba, en fin, autodestruyéndose.

William Shakespeare (Stratford-upon-Avon, c. April 23, 1564jul. - Ibid., April 23/May 3, 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor. Often known as the Bard of Avon (or simply the Bard), he is considered the most important writer in the English language and one of the most famous in world literature.

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "Shakespeare is generally acknowledged as the greatest of all time writers, a unique figure in the history of literature. The fame of other poets, such as Homer and Dante Alighieri, or novelists such as Leo Tolstoy or Charles Dickens, has transcended national barriers, but none has achieved the reputation of Shakespeare, whose works today are read and performed more frequently and in more countries than ever. The prophecy of one of his great contemporaries, Ben Jonson, has thus been fulfilled: 'Shakespeare does not belong to one age but to eternity'".
