El presente volumen analiza la recepción de ciertos héroes y heroínas de la Antigüedad en diversos procesos de construcción de la identidad nacional o colectiva y en la cultura de masas contemporánea. Se trata de una selección de personajes emblemáticos del mundo antiguo que va más allá de la figura canónica de héroe clásico o de líder político-militar. El listado de figuras analizadas incluye algunas sobradamente conocidas junto con otras que no lo son tanto, pero se trata en todos los casos de personajes masculinos y femeninos de la Antigüedad que se podrían catalogar de extraordinarios y que han dejado su huella, a distintos niveles y en diferentes momentos y espacios, en el mundo moderno.
