«El tiempo es un problema para nosotros, un tembloroso y exigente problema, acaso el más vital de la metafísica; la eternidad, un juego o una fatigada esperanza.» El ensayo que da título a este libro, publicado originalmente en 1936, se propone como una historia de esa imagen, esa burda palabra enriquecida por los desacuerdos humanos: la eternidad, un artificio que nos libra [...] de la opresión de lo sucesivo, tema también de "La doctrina de los ciclos" y "El tiempo circular". La índole de lo metafórico es asunto de "Las kenningar" y "La metáfora"; la de la traducción, lo es de "Los traductores de 'Las mil y una noches'". En "El acercamiento a Almotásin", que completa el volumen junto a "El arte de injuriar", Borges, al reseñar con detalle prolijo y erudito el libro del mismo nombre, juega: el libro no existe (al menos fuera de su imaginación). Tiempo y espacio, y en consecuencia eternidad e infinito, son en última instancia la materia básica de esta obra que tiene inscripto el germen que el genio borgeano desplegará durante medio siglo más.

Jorge Luis Borges (Buenos Aires, 1899 – Geneva, 1986) was one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, noted for his originality and literary precision. His work, primarily in the genres of short stories, essays, and poetry, redefined literature in the Spanish language. Throughout his life, he cultivated unparalleled erudition, with constant references to philosophy, metafiction, labyrinths, and the infinite.

Among his most recognized works are Fictions (1944), The Aleph (1949), The Maker (1960), and The Book of Sand (1975). Although he never received the Nobel Prize, he did obtain numerous international accolades for his work. His legacy continues to be a subject of study and admiration in the literary world worldwide.
