Synopsis "Hotel Noëlle: Closed, Counting"

For nine years, Miss Holliday has known where everyone belongs. Now the hotel is closing, and she has nowhere to put herself. December 1998. At Hotel Noëlle, the clocks run four minutes fast to leave time for goodbyes. The staff set places for people who aren’t there. And a promise, once entered in the book, is supposed to be kept. Miss Holliday runs the desk. She can read a guest’s intentions from a coat, arrange an apology without announcing it, and make almost any departure look civilized. But this Christmas will be the hotel’s last—and some of its oldest arrangements are beginning to look less like kindness. A son books three rooms because he cannot find the words to speak to his father. A woman’s coat has been waiting twenty-eight years. An auctioneer who prices other people’s treasures asks Holliday a question she has spent her working life avoiding. Meanwhile, an anonymous Advent box opens one small door each morning. Its instructions are becoming personal. As the final dance approaches, Holliday must decide which promises deserve a future, which stories need correcting, and what she wants when she is no longer needed behind the desk. Wry, atmospheric, and quietly moving, Hotel Noëlle: Closed, Counting is a novel about the people who make a place feel like home—and the courage it takes to build a life beyond it.
