Después de varios años estudiando en Europa, Grigori M. Litvínov descansa unos días en Baden-Baden, donde espera la llegada de su prometida. Baden-Baden es famosa por sus aguas y por su casino y hasta ella se arrastran todos los sectores de la sociedad rusa. Litvínov se encuentra así, sin comprenderlo, en un bullicioso microcosmos del mundo al que se dispone a regresar y en el que de pronto reaparece la princesa Irina Osinin, su frustrado amor de juventud, ahora casada con un general y aburrida de todo. A partir de este doble reencuentro Turguéniev construyó en Humo (1867), su penúltima novela, una intensa crónica de amor y decepción donde la naturaleza no respeta la lógica y un tremendo cuadro satírico que le valió la enemistad de sus compatriotas (especialmente la de Dostoievski) pero que no carece de una instigación convencida, aunque solitaria, al progreso y la civilización.

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, playwright, and poet, recognized for his role in 19th century realistic literature. His most influential work is Fathers and Sons (1862), which introduced the concept of nihilism and marked a milestone in Russian narrative. Other notable works include Diary of a Superfluous Man (1850), A Nest of the Gentry (1859), and Torrents of Spring (1872), among others.

Turgenev primarily wrote novels, stories, and plays, characterized by an elegant style and a deep psychological exploration of the characters. His work influenced authors like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Although he lived much of his life in Europe, his writings accurately captured the Russian society of his time.
