Il professore fu il primo romanzo di Charlotte Bronte (pubblicato con lo pseudonimo di Currer Bell); fu però pubblicato dal marito dopo la sua morte, ritenendolo un materiale interessante e autonomo, anche se molto del suo contenuto era stato utilizzato dalla scrittrice nel suo ultimo romanzo, Villette. Infatti in entrambi questi romanzi l'autrice attinge alla sua esperienza di istitutrice in Belgio, in cui, ventiseienne, visse una storia d'amore con un suo professore. "Il professore" fu rifiutato dall'editore; la stessa autrice, nella prefazione, riportata anche nel presente volume, ironizza sulle esigenze degli editori che preferiscono le storie romanzesche ed emozionanti rispetto a quelle più "reali". Per chi ama la scrittura della Bronte questo libro e Villette, il suo ultimo, sono molto interessanti per vedere come la scrittrice ha utilizzato diversamente lo stesso materiale autobiografico, fornendo punti di vista diversi, non solo per il genere del protagonista (maschile in questo primo romanzo, e femminile nell'ultimo), ma per la diversa maturazione di vita e di scrittrice.Versione integrale.
