Dieser Band enthält die Vorträge des XV. Internationalen Alfred-Döblin-Kolloquiums, das vom 18. bis 21. Mai 2005 in Mainz stattfand. Die Beiträge widmen sich Alfred Döblins intensivem institutionellen Engagement, das über seine Verantwortlichkeiten in der Preu ischen Akademie der Künste und der Mainzer Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur deutlich hinausreicht. Bei einem weitgefassten Begriff von Institution kann die Polarität von Institution und Provokation, von Affinität und Protest, von Konservativität und Avantgarde als facettenreiches und wandelbares Grundthema von Döblins gesamtem Werk verstanden werden. Die Tagungsbeiträge verorten Alfred Döblin in der kulturpolitischen Landschaft der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, wobei exemplarisch auch Teilaspekte wie Theaterrezensionen, Zeitschriftenwesen oder Analphabetismus beleuchtet werden. Am Beispiel von Werken wie Berlin Alexanderplatz, November 1918, Wadzeks Kampf mit der Dampfturbine, Wallenstein oder Wissen und Verändern wird die Wechselwirkung von lebensweltlichen Kontakten mit Institutionen und der Entwicklung von textueller Form und Inhalt diskutiert und versucht, die Leitfrage aus verschiedenen Perspektiven heraus zu erörtern.
