Synopsis "IST"

This book is about a contradiction.India is one of the world's great technology and outsourcing destinations. Indian engineers, developers, testers, project managers, business analysts, customer-service professionals and countless others work with colleagues and customers across the drastically distant United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and other parts of the world. They work across continents, across cultures. And, most importantly, across the time. This book asks a simple question:Who is expected to adjust? There are excellent American colleagues. There are excellent Indian managers. There are difficult people on both sides. Therefore, this is not a book arguing that Americans are bad or Indians are victims. It is a book about a system. A system in which the customer's convenience can quietly become more important than the employee's life.A system in which "flexibility" can become a one-way street.A system in which the Indian employee may know the time in New York, California, London, Sydney and India-but may have forgotten what time his own family expects him home. The characters and incidents in this book are fictional or composite representations of situations commonly associated with global IT/BPO work. They should not be read as accounts of specific identifiable individuals or companies unless explicitly stated otherwise. The purpose is not to blame. The purpose is to ask uncomfortable questions. And perhaps, eventually, to reset the clock.
