Au lendemain de la Deuxieme guerre mondiale, un jeune bourgeois bordelais rencontre une jeune fille pauvre, apatride, fille d'une aristocrate germano-russe ruinee et d'un Georgien bipolaire, disparu et certainement fusille a la Liberation. Il devine, en l'epousant, qu'il s'engage dans tout autre chose que l'union paisible avec la jeune bourgeoise bordelaise a laquelle il etait promis. Mais il n'imagine pas a quel point, ni quel destin romanesque et quelle somme d'epreuves l'attendent au cours des soixante-et-onze ans de son mariage avec Helene Zourabichvili, qui deviendra sous son nom a lui, Carrere d'Encausse, specialiste internationalement reconnue de la Russie (mais aussi de l'epizootie du mouton en Ouzbekistan), familiere du Kremlin et de ses maitres successifs, secretaire perpetuelle de l'Academie française, ni qu'avant de mourir lui-meme - 147 jours apres elle et, a mon avis, de chagrin , ecrit Emmanuel Carrere - il assistera, dans la cour des Invalides, a ses funerailles nationales.

Emmanuel Carrère (Paris, December 9, 1957) is a French writer, screenwriter, and filmmaker known for his ability to blend reality and fiction in his works. His literary career spans novels, biographies, and essays that explore the human condition and the complexities of identity.

Among his most notable works are "The Adversary" (2000), a non-fiction novel that tells the real story of Jean-Claude Romand; "Limonov" (2011), a fictional biography of the controversial Russian writer and politician Eduard Limonov; and "The Kingdom" (2014), a deep reflection on the origins of Christianity. Carrère has been awarded prizes such as the Femina Prize in 1995 and the Renaudot Prize in 2011. In 2021, he received the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature for his contribution to contemporary literature.
