Vera lebt bei ihrem Vater. Ihre Eltern haben sich getrennt. Eines Tages wird sie in einen Zug gesetzt und auf eine Nordseeinsel "verschickt". Im Heim hört sie auf zu sprechen. Sie beschreibt ihre eigenen Erlebnisse und die ihres Vaters und ihrer Mutter meist aus kindlicher Sicht. In den Erwachsenen sind die Kriegserlebnisse präsent. Im Jugendclub, ihrer zweiten Heimat, trifft sie Michael und lernt die Folgen von Krieg, Flucht und Holocaust anders kennen. Das Verhältnis zu ihrem Vater wird problematisch, das zu ihrer Mutter enger. Eines haben fast alle gemeinsam: sie schweigen. Aber in Veras Kopf ist alles drin: ein Tumor, die Reise an die Nordsee und die Schulzeit in Berlin, ihre Eltern, die Armut, aber auch der Beginn einer gro en Liebe. Die Erinnerungen, Splitter im Kopf, können, müssen aber nicht nacheinander gelesen werden.
