Nacido en Valencia, fue hijo del comerciante Gaspar Blasco y de Ramona Ibáñez, ambos de origen aragonés. Según su propio testimonio, uno de sus primeros recuerdos fue la barricada levantada en su calle por los insurrectos durante la rebelión cantonal cuando tenía seis años, en los inicios de la Primera República Española (1873-1874). También recordaba haber visto a los héroes del Cantón, Cabalote y el Enguerino. El primer libro que leyó fue La historia de los girondinos de Lamartine y luego las obras de Victor Hugo, especialmente Los miserables. Según el historiador Ramiro Reig, a partir de ese momento tuvo claro lo que iba a ser: escritor revolucionario.
