Pensador de variados intereses, profesor de historia de la ciencia en la Sorbona, Bachelard ha sumado valiosos aportes al desarrollo de la epistemología contemporánea, inspirados en una original concepción de la dialéctica y de las sucesivas negaciones que presiden el refinamiento de las nociones científicas. “La filosofía del no no es psicológicamente un negativismo y tampoco lleva, frente a la naturaleza, a un nihilismo. Procede de una actividad constructiva. Pensar bien lo real es aprovecharse de sus ambigüedades para modificar el pensamiento y alertarlo. Dialectizar el pensamiento significa aumentar la garantía de crear científicamente fenómenos completos, de regenerar todas las variables que la ciencia, como el pensamiento ingenuo, había descuidado.” En una prosa elegante y precisa, dentro del marco de una epistemología penetrante y sugestiva, Bachelard ofrece en este libro reflexiones acerca de los desarrollos de la física y la química, estudiando los intentos de apertura del pensamiento científico en tres dominios tan diferentes como son la categoría de sustancia, la intuición y la lógica.

Philosopher, epistemologist, poet, physicist, professor, and literary critic is in a certain sense an unclassifiable author. He was interested in the history of modern or contemporary science, and at the same time in literary imagination, to which he dedicated parallel attention. He earned his doctorate at the Sorbonne in 1927. Between 1930 and 1940, he was a philosophy professor at the Faculty of Letters in Dijon, and later, between 1940 and 1954, he was a professor of history and philosophy of sciences at the Sorbonne, succeeding Abel Rey. In the literary-critical part of his work, Bachelard will focus on deepening the problem of poetic imagination. His studies on the psychology of the elements - water, air, earth - in relation to literature are now classics: Psychoanalysis of Fire (1938), Water and Dreams (1942), Air and Dreams (1943), Earth and Reveries of Will (1948) The Poetics of Space (1957), and The Poetics of Reverie (1960). Bachelard's influence has been evident in later thinkers who have addressed the same theme. He was also read by Barthes or Starobinski, and figures like Georges Canguilhem and Michel Foucault have acknowledged his importance in the epistemological field.
