Un hombre sin grandes motivaciones, sin grandes proyectos vitales, decide un poco por hacer algo emprender un viaje e informarse lo más que pueda sobre este autor prácticamente desconocido, con vistas a una vaga exégesis, a un informe, un artículo, quién sabe. En su pesquisa va descubriendo la historia de tres amigos (David Lawstein, Gabriel Echenoz y Luis Armando Orbiac) que vivieron en una ciudad menor del sur de Francia (Bayona) y lo que les aconteció.
