Mister Phileas Fogg, un inglés aristocrático del siglo XIX, es una persona sumamente calculadora, apacible e imperturbable, la clase alta de Londrés lo reconoce como alguien intachable y todo un caballero, cuyas costumbres fuertemente arraigadas y cuya rutina repetida hasta el hartazgo se pensaba morirían con él. Una tarde, jugando al Whist con sus amigos en el “Reform club” de Londres, él propone una apuesta casi irresistible para sus compañeros de juego. Phileas Fogg aseguraba que era posible dar la vuelta al mundo en tan sólo 80 días, o incluso menos y que él sería el que lo hiciera. La suma apostada es nada más ni nada menos que veinte mil libras, una fortuna irresistible. Sus amigos aceptaron de inmediato, creyendo que era una tarea imposible. Esa misma noche, Phileas Fogg, al que se creía alguien metódico y que nunca se aventuraría más allá de su querida Inglaterra, parte en la aventura de recorrer el globo con la ayuda de su recién contratado criado francés Passepartout (llamado picaporte en castellano).

Jules Verne was a prolific French author who is considered one of the fathers of science fiction, alongside the English H. G. Wells. He began by writing some theatrical plays and published several short stories and scientific articles. His ambition was to write a new type of novel, one that combined adventure with scientific facts. That dream was fulfilled with Five Weeks in a Balloon, the first of his great novels. Verne was always very interested in the scientific novelties of his time. From that passion, seminal works of science fiction such as Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the Moon, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea were born. Verne's influence goes beyond literature, as he has inspired several generations of people who have dedicated themselves to science.
