Una de esas obras que necesariamente tendría que llevar cualquiera en su indispensable bagaje a una isla desierta, es una pieza cardinal de la literatura de todos los tiempos y países. Se trata de una colección de relatos de raigambre oriental, cuya primera redacción en árabe se llevó a cabo en el Bagdad ablasí durante los siglos VIII y IX, llenos de vivacidad, picardía, fantasía deslumbrante de ingenio, algunos de los cuales se remontan a China, Indochina, Persia, India, Grecia y Egipto. Fue en el siglo V cuando en Egipto recibió una primera estructura más acabada, que el orientalista y arqueólogo francés Antoine Galland, dio a conocer a Occidente al traducirlo por primera vez en 1704. Aunque con muchos anacronismos históricos, la obra es un filón inagotable de información poética, etnográfica y folclórica.
