En sus inicios trabajó para Esquire, CBS y fue uno de los miembros fundadores de Push Pin Studios junto con Milton Glaser y Seymour Chwast. Diseñador de un buen número de portadas de libros, también ilustró y diseño diversos libros infantiles y fue el diseñador de los carteles y de los títulos de crédito de algunas de las películas de Federico Fellini.
