Debido a una epidemia de sarampion, dos matrimonios que viajan en barco & x02014;los Macphail y los Davidson& x02014; deciden desembarcar y quedarse en una isla del Pacifico llamada Pago Pago. Pero alli solo hay una pension, donde coinciden con la señorita Thompson, que trabaja como prostituta. Eso escandaliza a los Davidson, que son misioneros.
