Este libro invita a pensar de una forma nueva esta «escuela de pensamiento», a la vez que ofrece una introducción accesible al «gnosticismo» en el contexto de la primitiva diversidad cristiana. La investigación actual se esfuerza por superar los prejuicios existentes a la hora de abordar el fenómeno gnóstico. Aboga asimismo por llevar a cabo una aproximación más cuidadosa que exponga con rigor cómo el mito y los rituales gnósticos se ocupaban de iluminar el sentido de la vida, ofrecían un mensaje de salvación en Jesús y proporcionaban un medio de alcanzar el conocimiento de Dios, fuente última para el ser humano. Más que describir a los gnósticos como herejes o perdedores en la lucha por la definición del cristianismo, el autor argumenta que participaron en su configuración junto a otros grupos cristianos, los cuales no sólo no se limitaron a rechazar las ideas gnósticas, sino que adaptaron y transformaron muchas de ellas.
