Al averiguarse que los dos hombres asesinados eran letones, Wallander no tiene más remedio que viajar a Riga, donde se introduce en los ambientes más corruptos, gobernados por bandas criminales. En medio de ese ambiente tan sórdido, a Wallander sólo le faltaba conocer a Baiba Liepa. Intriga, amor y conflictos de toda índole se apoderan entonces de su vida.
