La investigación presentada aquí es una tentativa de descubrir las significaciones, los valores, los imaginarios asociados al rostro, una manera de responder a la fascinación que él ejerce, no para desflorar el secreto, sino para acercarnos más, caminar en su cercanía para descubrir cuánto de él se esconde.
El rostro ofrecido al mundo es un compromiso entre las orientaciones colectivas y la manera personal en que cada actor se acomoda. Las mímicas y las emociones que lo atraviesan, las puestas en escena de su apariencia (peinado, maquillaje, etc.), son muestra de un simbolismo social en el seno del cual, el actor puede mantener su estilo particular.
El rostro también es el lugar del otro, él nace en el corazón del lazo social, ya en el cara a cara original del niño con su madre (el primer rostro), y se continúa en innumerables contactos que hacen y deshacen la vida cotidiana.
Uno de los caracteres de la violencia simbólica puesta en acción por el racista consiste en la negación del rostro del otro. El odio hacia el otro lleva a su desfiguración; la dignidad del rostro le es negada.
El encarnizamiento contra el rostro no puede nada contra él, cuando puede mirarse de frente. El rostro es el lugar más humano de la persona. El lugar, tal vez, donde nace el sentimiento de lo sagrado.

David Le Breton (Le Mans, France, 1953) is a prominent French sociologist and anthropologist, known for his deep exploration of human corporeality and its relationship with society and culture. He is a professor at the University of Strasbourg and a member of the University Institute of France.

His work covers topics such as pain, silence, the face, walking, and risk behaviors, with a particular focus on the experience of the body in modernity.
