En Los testimonios, si bien predominan los poemas en versos, Roque Dalton acude en no pocas ocasiones a la prosa, que constituye el rasgo más distintivo del poemario. La tensión entre estas dos formas de expresión, lograda de manera inigualable, da fe de la evolución poética alcanzada por el escritor salvadoreño.

El presente volumen, escrito entre México y La Habana y publicado en 1964, muestra a un Roque Dalton que asume su papel de vocero de la historia nacional y regional. Con estudiada estructura y cuidadoso orden propone temas como el indigenismo, el amor y las angustias existenciales, al tiempo que asoman, como siempre, las inquietudes políticas que atraviesan su obra.
