Durch mehrstufige Reinigung wurden elektrophoretisch homogene Präparate von MDH (CF 1.1.1.37) aus Bakterien der Gattung Sphaerotilus gewonnen. Eine dimere Form des Enzyms (73 kDa) funktioniert während des organotrophen Wachstums in S. natans D-380. Das Molekulargewicht der MDH-Untereinheiten betrug 35 kDa. Michaelis-Konstanten für Oxalacetat, Malat, NAD+, NADH wurden bestimmt. Die Wirkung von Metallionen auf die Aktivität der Malatdehydrogenase wurde ebenfalls untersucht, und es wurden die optimalen Temperaturen für die Vorwärts- und Rückwärtsreaktionen ermittelt. Die räumliche Struktur der MDH-Moleküle wurde mittels Rasterkraftmikroskopie untersucht.
