Synopsis "Mathilda (in German)"

Die Novelle "Mathilda" war Mary Shelleys zweite literarische Arbeit nach ihrem Erstlingswerk "Frankenstein". Der brisante Inhalt (Inzest zwischen Vater und Tochter) hätte zur Zeit der Niederschrift (1819) zu einem Skandal führen können. Marys Vater William Godwin unterdrückte eine Veröffentlichung, um "Missverständnissen" vorzubeugen. Das Manuskript schlummerte in seinem Nachlass, so dass die Erstveröffentlichung erst im Jahre 1959 erfolgte. Die Geschichte einer zu engen Vater-Tochter-Beziehung wird heute keinen gesellschaftlichen Eklat mehr hervorrufen; doch als Darstellung der inneren Konflikte einer jungen Frau, die an dem Widerspruch zwischen ihren Gefühlen und den gesellschaftlichen Ansprüchen zerbricht, und als Beispiel für die Melancholie und Todessehnsucht der englischen Romantik ist sie durchaus auch heute noch lesenswert.
