In this poignant work of biographical fiction, the narrator Abdellah, a grown man living in Paris, recalls his childhood home of Morocco, sharing his cherished earliest memories with the reader. The product of the twin riverside cities of Rabat and Salé—places touched by modernity but still rife with poverty—the protagonist shares his knowledge of the different currents that imbue these cities with life, as well as their numerous Moroccan mysteries: witches, the hamman, the baraka, and the ziara. As he recounts his upbringing in Morocco, with all of its people, its secret influences, its views on luck and destiny, and its fortunetellers and saints, Abdellah discovers that his love for the place is as strong as it ever was. En esta conmovedora obra de ficción biográfica, el narrador Abdelá, un hombre ya adulto viviendo en París, recuerda su país natal de Marruecos, compartiendo sus memorias más tempranas y queridas con el lector.
