"A menudo me echan en cara -dice Chéjov en un fragmento que recoge Ricardo San Vicente, traductor de la obra, en su introducción- que escribo sobre fruslerías, que no tengo héroes positivos, revolucionarios (...). He escrito mis obras para decir a la gente sólo una cosa: "Miraos bien y fijaos en la vida inútil y triste que lleváis". Lo más importante es que la gente se dé cuenta de esto. Y cuando lo entiendan seguro que construirán otra vida, una vida mejor".

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) was a master of the short story and one of the great innovators of modern narrative.
