Edward Frederic Benson (1867–1940) fue un novelista, biógrafo y ensayista británico, conocido por su aguda sátira social y su retrato humorístico de la vida en la Inglaterra eduardiana. Nació el 24 de julio de 1867 en Wellington College, Berkshire, hijo del arzobispo de Canterbury, Edward White Benson, y de Mary Sidgwick Benson, una destacada intelectual. Estudió en Marlborough College y en King’s College, Cambridge, donde destacó por su talento literario y su vivaz personalidad.

Benson publicó su primera novela, Dodo (1893), con gran éxito, lo que le valió fama por su ingeniosa crítica a la alta sociedad londinense. Sin embargo, su obra más célebre es la serie Mapp and Lucia (1920–1939), un conjunto de novelas cómicas que retratan con ironía las rivalidades y pretensiones de la pequeña burguesía inglesa en pueblos ficticios inspirados en Rye, donde él mismo residía. Además de ficción, escribió biografías, relatos de fantasmas y ensayos.

Fue alcalde de Rye y un miembro activo de la comunidad literaria. Murió el 29 de febrero de 1940. Su estilo elegante, su humor refinado y su capacidad para observar las debilidades humanas lo convirtieron en uno de los grandes cronistas sociales de su tiempo.
