En el barco conoce a Aliro Leftraru, uno de los marineros embarcados en Talcahuano, de sangre mapuche y herencia guerrera quien no tarda en tener problemas para adaptarse, aunque genera una verdadera amistad con Caleb. Tras toparse con el infortunio de otro barco ballenero que se ha hundido dejando solo un bote, los sobrevivientes les narran la cruda historia de cómo lograron escapar del ataque de una monstruosa ballena blanca. Aliro conoce la leyenda mapuche de la ballena blanca y abandona el barco, y Caleb lo acompaña. Ellos junto con Duncan Sheffield un naturalista Inglés erradicado en tierras mapuches, ingeniaran un plan para acabar con la caza indiscriminada de ballenas en el pacífico.

Francisco Ortega (1974) is the author of the Trilogy of the Caesars (Planeta, 2006-2016). Also of the novel Salisbury (Planeta, 2017) and the children's adventure series Max Urdemales (Planeta Lector, 2015-2018). He is co-author, along with Nelson Dániel, of the graphic novels Metahulla: 1899 and 1959; and with Gonzalo Martínez of Mocha Dick and Alex Nemo and the Brotherhood of the Nautilus (2017).

In 2018, he published Chilean Gods, a non-fiction anthology that reviews the myths and legends of Chile. Along with the cartoonist Félix Vega, he is preparing a graphic biography of Augusto Pinochet. He also collaborates in various media and writes film and TV scripts.
