Necronomicón es la compilación de varios relatos que, justamente, hacen referencia al famoso libro escrito por Abdoul Alhazred, poeta loco huido de Sanaa al Yemen, en la época de los califas Omeyas, hacia el año 700. Se dice que los dos textos latinos que aún subsisten, uno está guardado en el Museo Británico y el otro en la Biblioteca Nacional de París. Una edición del siglo XVII se halla en la Biblioteca de Wiedener de Harvard y otra en la biblioteca de la Universidad de Miskatonic, en Arkham; y, a la vez, hay una más en la biblioteca de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.
