Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) war ein französischer Maler der klassischen Schule, der Klarheit und Logik in seinen Gemälden bevorzugte. Oft malte er Szenen aus der Mythologie oder der Bibel, betätigte sich aber auch äußerst erfolgreich auf dem Feld der Landschaftsmalerei. Für einige Zeit war er Premier Peintre du Roi (Erster Maler des Königs) unter Ludwig XIII., verbrachte jedoch die meiste Zeit seines Lebens in Rom. Sein Stil wurde zum of?ziellen Malstil an der Akademie in Paris, beein?usste aber auch noch spätere Künstler wie Jacques-Louis David.Der Autor Dr. Otto Grautoff folgt in seinen kurzweiligen Ausführungen den Pfaden Nicolas Poussins von seinen Jugendjahren bis zu seinem Tode und entwirft dabei ein Panorama, das das Werk des Malers stets in den Kontext des Kunst- und Zeitgeschehens setzt, in dem es entstanden ist.
