Andrés Oppenheimer is one of the most influential journalists and writers in the Spanish language. Born in Argentina, he studied at the University of Buenos Aires and later obtained a master's degree in Journalism at Columbia University. He was the head of The Miami Herald's bureau in Mexico, and in charge of this newspaper's coverage in Colombia, Panama, and other countries. He worked for five years at The Associated Press in New York and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Republic, CBS News, and El País, from Spain. He is currently a columnist for The Miami Herald and host of the program Oppenheimer Presenta on Foro TV and CNN in Spanish. His most recent books are Crear o morir, Basta de historias, Cuentos chinos, and Crónicas de héroes y bandidos. He was a winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize along with the team from The Miami Herald that uncovered the Iran-Contras scandal; he received the Ortega y Gasset awards from the newspaper El País; the King of Spain Award, granted by the EFE agency; the Maria Moors Cabot from Columbia University; the Overseas Press Club Award, and the Suncoast Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences of the United States. He has been honored with honorary doctorates by ESAN University of Peru, Domingo Savio University of Bolivia, and Galileo University of Guatemala.
