Siamo ai giorni nostri. Un organista di mezza età vive all'interno dello strumento della chiesa in cui presta servizio, e questo all'insaputa di tutti. Da quella dimora clandestina è anonimo testimone di ciò che accade dentro al tempio sacro. Un fatto nuovo si profila all'orizzonte: lo smontaggio di quel vecchio organo per far posto ad un nuovo strumento. Egli, rintanatosi in un eremo musicale, ora pare destarsi dal torpore che lo ha condannato a condurre una vita quasi da stilita. Con l'aiuto di una ragazza svolge un'indagine volta a scoprire la vera causa della morte del parroco. Il racconto si sofferma in più punti a riflettere sul significato dei nostri comportamenti e sulla sostanza del rapporto che abbiamo col prossimo.
