Synopsis "Operacion Castigo (in Spanish)"

A mediados de marzo de 1943 y con gran secreto se formó el Escuadrón X, cuya misión era romper las represas del Ruhr para inundar las tierras de cultivo y paralizar la industria en ese importantísimo valle alemán. Si bien el heroísmo de la tripulación aérea fue totalmente auténtico, al igual que la brillantez de algunos protagonistas de la misión como Barnes Wallis —el inventor de la bomba Upkeep—, también lo es que los comandantes que prometieron a sus jóvenes aviadores que el éxito podría acortar la guerra fantasearon salvajemente. Hastings describe vívidamente toda la operación, desde la perspectiva puramente militar a las devastadoras pérdidas materiales y humanas: unos 1.400 civiles murieron en las inundaciones que arrasaron el valle de Möhne, más de la mitad de ellos prisioneras francesas o trabajadoras forzadas rusas y polacas.
