Marguerite Yourcenar (1903–1987) was a distinguished French writer, naturalized American, known for her mastery in historical novels, essays, and poetry. Her most famous work is Memoirs of Hadrian (1951), translated into Spanish by Julio Cortázar. Other notable novels include Opus nigrum (1968), Alexis or the Treatise of Vain Struggle (1929) and Coup de Grâce (1939). She also ventured into short narrative with titles like Fires (1936), Oriental Tales (1938) and As Water Flows (1982)

Yourcenar was the first woman to be elected a member of the French Academy in 1980. Her literary style is characterized by refined prose and a deep exploration of the human condition. In addition to her work as a novelist, she was an essayist, poet, and translator, cultivating a body of work marked by humanism and erudition.
