En el contexto de una Rusia sacudida por la reforma agraria y la abolición de la servidumbre, dos estudiantes, Evguéni Bazárov y Arkadi Kirsánov, regresan a sus casas, en provincias, después de tres años de ausencia. El reencuentro con sus progenitores pone de manifiesto los conflictos generacionales a través de los cuales Turguéniev hace un retrato magnífico de una sociedad que busca una salida a la profunda crisis en la que está inmersa. De los diálogos y reflexiones de sus personajes, el autor hace fluir las teorías políticas, filosóficas y científicas del momento, de las que Bazarov, personaje central de la novela, se hace eco configurándose como el prototipo de personaje nihilista. Padres e hijos, considerada como la obra cumbre de Turguéniev y uno de los hitos del realismo ruso, logra romper las barreras del espacio y el tiempo y sorprender, todavía hoy, por la modernidad de sus planteamientos.

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, playwright, and poet, recognized for his role in 19th century realistic literature. His most influential work is Fathers and Sons (1862), which introduced the concept of nihilism and marked a milestone in Russian narrative. Other notable works include Diary of a Superfluous Man (1850), A Nest of the Gentry (1859), and Torrents of Spring (1872), among others.

Turgenev primarily wrote novels, stories, and plays, characterized by an elegant style and a deep psychological exploration of the characters. His work influenced authors like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Although he lived much of his life in Europe, his writings accurately captured the Russian society of his time.
