यह कहना अतिशयोक्ति न होगी कि यदि बंग्ला साहित्य में से शरत् को हटा दिया जाए तो उसके पास जो कुछ शेष रहेगा वह न के बराबर ही होगा। शरत् ने बंग्ला साहित्य को समृद्ध ही नहीं किया है अपितु उसे परिमार्जित भी किया है। तत्कालीन बंगाल की सामाजिक, आर्थिक, धर्मिक और रानैतिक स्थिति का त्रिण करते समय उनकी लेखनी केवल बंगाल तक ही सीमित नहीं रही बल्कि वह देश की तत्कालीन परिस्थितियों को भी स्पष्ट कर देती है और यहीं आकर शरत् केवल बंगाल के ही नहीं वरन् समूचे देश के महान उपन्यासकार बन जाते हैं। तत्कालीन भारतीय समाज में फैली कुरीतियों और दुर्बलताओं के साथ-साथ शरत् ने उनकी विशेषताओं और गुणों को भी बड़ी कुशलता से चित्रित किया है। भारतीय नारी के रूप के साथ-साथ उसके आन्तरिक सौन्दर्य, उसकी मनोभावनाओं का चित्रण शरत् ने जिस कुशलता से किया है भारतीय भाषाओं का कोई भी उपन्यासकार आज तक उसे छू नहीं पाया है। भले ही वह 'देवदास' की पारो हो या 'शेष प्रश्न' की सबिता या फिर 'श्रीकान्त' की राजलक्ष्मी और अन्य नारी पात्रा, शरत् ने नारी को जितने निकट से देखा है, जिस दृष्टि से देखा है वह निकटता और भारत की अन्य भाषाओं के उपन्यासकारों के पास नहीं मिलती। शरत् के हर उपन्यास का ह&
