Astrid Anna Emilia Ericsson, conocida literariamente como Astrid Lindgren nació en la granja Näs, cerca de Vimmerby (Småland), al sur de Suecia, el 14 de noviembre de 1907.

Se convirtió en madre soltera a los dieciocho años, al nacer su primer hijo, Lars, a quien tuvo que dejar durante tres años con una familia de acogida. En 1931 se casó con Sture Lindgren, jefe de la empresa en la que trabajaba.
En 1934 nació su hija Karin. Fue durante la convalecencia de su hija en una neumonía que empezó a inventarse las historias de Pippi Calzaslargas.

En  1944 se decidió a plasmarlas sobre el papel, y envió el manuscrito a una editorial sueca, que lo rechazó pero tras ganar un concurso, la editorial Rabén & Sjögren publicó Pippi Calzaslargas en 1945. En 1958 recibió el Premio Hans Christian Andersen, considerado el Nobel de literatura infantil y juvenil, y en 1994 recibió el Premio Right Livelihood.

Pippi Långstrump dio paso a la famosa serie de televisión, se ha considerado una obra profundamente feminista, hasta el punto que la historia de Pippi, una niña  independiente y autónoma fue censurada en España durante el franquismo, pero en cambió fue un gran éxito cuando se emitió en 1975.
Pippi era una niña soñadora, feliz, pizpireta, rodeada de animales y que vestía como le daba la gana.  “La niña más fuerte del mundo” hizo trizas los estereotipos de género. No pretendía ser la más hermosa y dulce, ni lograr casarse con un príncipe, sino ser fuerte, valiente y aventurera, ni siquiera aspiraba a todo eso, simplemente lo era por decisión propia.

Pippi fue un referente para las niñas de los setenta.
