Synopsis "Please Keep Your Receipts"

The store is closing. Lissa Humphrey is still trying to take care of everyone in it.For thirteen years, Lissa has worked the returns counter at Dauterive’s Department Store in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. She knows which customers need a refund and which ones need someone to listen. When the store announces its closure, she sets about protecting her coworkers’ wages and severance, even though she will soon be out of work herself. Then Darryl Plaiscance arrives with an unopened stand mixer from a wedding that never happened. Fourteen years earlier, he gave Lissa a first date she has never let him forget. Now he is caring for a father whose memory is failing, and their renewed friendship offers something neither of them planned to need.As the final sale approaches, Lissa keeps saying yes to everyone except herself. But exhaustion has consequences, and prayer is bringing her face to face with a truth she would rather avoid: she cannot earn her place in other people’s lives by wearing herself out for them. To build a life beyond the counter, she will have to accept help—and decide whether she can trust Darryl with more than an old story. Read more
