Plotino representa el último gran intento de la filosofía griega de ofrecer una explicación racional de la realidad. En él se funden, en un completo sis- tema, elementos recogidos a lo largo de toda la tradición filosófica anterior, pero de forma original y novedosa. Así, plantea una realidad jerarquizada, donde el Uno es el principio de todas las cosas, aquello de lo que todo parte y a lo que todo regresa. De él deriva toda la pluralidad de los seres, incluido el hombre, cuyo único anhelo ha de ser retornar, mediante la purificación y la virtud, a ese principio supremo. La posterior identificación del Uno con la idea de Dios convirtió a Plotino en una figura ineludible, clave para comprender el desarrollo del pensamiento cristiano medieval.
