Nacida cerca de Osaka en 1970.

Muy pronto se desplaza a Tokio con la intención de realizar el sueño de convertirse en autora de manga. Su debut fue en 1989 con la historia Pajama de Ojama (publicada en el nº 3 de Shojo Comics). Desde entonces hasta la actualidad ha producido más de 50 volúmenes de historias cortas y series. Watase es conocida sobre todo por la serie Fushigi Yugi, tanto en su versión manga como en anime.
