Zwei Fragen begleiten die Konstitution der Ethik als philosophischer Disziplin: 1. Was ist der leitende Zweck einer philosophischen Ethik? 2. Welchen Beitrag zu diesem Zweck kann die Philosophie leisten? In wenigen Zeilen des Einleitungskapitels der Nikomachischen Ethik gibt Aristoteles auf beide Fragen eine dezidierte und bis heute erwägenswerte, nach Ansicht der Studie von O. Höffe sogar bis heute überzeugende Antwort. Die erste Antwort besteht im wirkungsmächtigen Gedanken einer praktischen Philosophie. Der Begriff ist ebenso wie sein Gegenbegriff, der der theoretischen Philosophie, ungewöhnlich, sogar provokativ. Aristoteles versteht die Ethik als eine in mehrfacher Hinsicht praktische Philosophie. Die Praxis ist nicht nur ihr spezifisches Thema, sondern auch ihre Voraussetzung und ihr eigentliches Ziel. Allerdings ist die Philosophie nicht der konkreten Lebensumstände mächtig. Um die praktische Intention trotzdem verwirklichen zu können, bedarf sie, so die zweite Antwort, einer besonderen Rationalitätsform, der Grundriß-Wissenschaft.
