Escritas casi simultáneamente, las dos novelas cortas que componen esta obra trabajan con todas las variantes posibles de la narración: la autobiografía, el cuento policial, el relato histórico, la ficción teórica, el diario, el relato sentimental, el cuento fantástico. A partir de la lógica del complot, Piglia ha construido un relato lineal donde todos los acontecimientos están entrelazados, atravesados por la amenaza, que sin embargo funciona como un juego de espejos o una adivinanza circular. Un crimen, una intriga. Una mujer en la cárcel es el centro de un calidoscopio donde giran microscópicos mundos narrativos. Encerrado en una habitación de hotel, donde escribe un Diario, Stephen Stevensen ha dedicado su existencia a construir una réplica en miniatura del orden del mundo. A través de una exhaustiva clasificación de la experiencia, intenta contar su vida y conocer el futuro. Quizá sea el libro, ahora en su versión definitiva, que mejor representa el estilo de la literatura de Piglia.

Ricardo Piglia (Adrogué, 1941-Buenos Aires, 2017) is unanimously considered a classic of current Spanish-language literature. He published his five novels at Anagrama: Artificial Respiration, The Absent City, Burnt Money (adapted into film by Marcelo Piñeyro; Planeta Prize Argentina), Nocturnal Target (Critics' Prize, Rómulo Gallegos Prize, International Dashiell Hammett Novel Prize, and José María Arguedas Casa de las Américas Narrative Prize) and The Path of Ida; the stories of The Invasion, False Name, Perpetual Prison and The Cases of Commissioner Croce; and the texts of Brief Forms (Bartolomé March Critic's Prize), Criticism and Fiction, The Last Reader, and Personal Anthology, which can be read as the first essays and attempts at a future autobiography, which crystallizes in The Diaries of Emilio Renzi, divided into three volumes. Piglia was also awarded the Grand Prize of Honor of the Argentine Writers Society, the José Donoso, the Ibero-American Narrative Manuel Rojas, the Konex, and the Formentor de las Letras.
