Synopsis "Question pascalienne / The Pascalian Question"

'Why am I here rather than there, now rather than then? Who put me here?' François Galichet echoes Pascal's question: 'Why me? Why am I me and not someone else?' It is because, he answers in this book, I am not content with a purely factual existence; I am driven by a normative imperative.Man is a normative animal: by the simple fact of his existence, he demands and defines what must be. The book sets out to highlight the multiple meanings, ambiguities and paradoxes that characterise man and his identity. What does it mean to 'be oneself' in a world where I can now change not only my social status, but also my biological characteristics, gender, etc.? The obvious arbitrariness of incarnation is the very question posed by Pascal.Fundamental questions, delicate issues and sometimes heated controversies are dealt with here in a very personal way, brilliantly drawing on literature, cinema and philosophy.
