Dort findet er - nach abenteuerlichen Stationen als Eisenbahnarbeiter und Goldsucher - eine neue Heimat in einer Mennoniten-Siedlung. Bis ihn ein Unfall ereilt, den für die Aufrechnung seiner Schuld hält. Entstanden 1886/1889. Erstdruck: Die Gartenlaube (Leipzig), Januar-März 1890. Vollständige Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2016. Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: Theodor Fontane: Romane und Erzählungen in acht Bänden. Herausgegeben von Peter Goldammer, Gotthard Erler, Anita Golz und Jürgen Jahn, 2. Auflage, Band 5, Berlin und Weimar: Aufbau, 1973. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt.
