Vicksburg, June 1863. Grant's army has the city in a ring of trenches, and inside the ring the men are dying faster of fever than of shot. On the Jackson Road, Brigadier General Adam Atkinson commands a division he can barely feed and a regiment he cannot command at all: the Legion, a privately raised cavalry outfit whose colonel, Asa Pelham, pays for his own horses, answers to his own family, and has just been told that the fever came into camp with his men. When Atkinson takes something from Pelham to settle the matter, Pelham withdraws the Legion to the river and sits down in his tent to watch the division bleed. Across the ravine, a Confederate colonel named Prior is waiting for exactly that. Over fifteen days-a mine, a failed assault, a burial truce, a wire from Washington, and one grey horse in a borrowed coat-the quarrel between two proud men on the same side costs everyone around them more than the enemy does. And when Pelham finally comes up the hill, it is not to save the division. The siege happened. The people did not. One man's anger. Everyone else pays.
