Albinus, un respetable crítico de arte, conoce a Margot, una mujer mucho más joven que él, que trabaja como acomodadora en un cine y suena con ser actriz. Albinus queda prendado de sus encantos y abandona a su esposa y a su hija para fugarse con ella. Pero entonces irrumpe una tercera persona, Axel Rex, un joven artista rebosante de talento y de cinismo, que ha sido amante de Margot. Se completa así el último vértice de un triángulo amoroso de fatídicas consecuencias. Devorado por los celos, Albinus sufre un accidente automovilístico que lo deja ciego. Entonces decide retirarse a una casa aislada con Margot y ella acepta acompanarlo. Pero lo que Albinus no sabe es que en la casa se instala también Axel, que hace el amor con Margot y se pasea retadoramente desnudo ante el desvalido Albinus, que oye pasos enigmáticos e intuye que algo extrano está sucediendo a su alrededor. Escrita en ruso en 1932, durante su exilio berlinés, y posteriormente traducida al inglés por el propio autor, esta novela aborda un tema clásico: un triángulo amoroso en el que se entremezclan la pasión y la degradación; un tema que le sirve al genial Vladimir Nabokov para reflexionar sobre las relaciones entre la vida y el arte, entre la imaginación y la realidad, y para armar uno de sus brillantes artefactos literarios repletos de guinos y ramificaciones.

Vladimir Nabokov was born in Saint Petersburg into an aristocratic family in 1899, but his family background first, and later his personal interests, took him to Germany, England, France, and the United States, where he began a brilliant career as a poet, novelist, critic, and translator, while teaching Literature at several prestigious universities. His novels Mary (1926), King, Queen, Knave (1928), The Defense (1930), Glory (1932), Laughter in the Dark (1933), Despair and The Gift (both from 1934), Invitation to a Beheading (1938), The Eye (1937), The Enchanter (1939), The Real Life of Sebastian Knight (1941) and Ultima Thule (1942) preceded the monumental success of Lolita (1955) which allowed him to leave teaching and fully dedicate himself to his writing vocation. Later came Pnin (1957), Pale Fire (1962), Ada or Ardor (1969), Transparent Things (1972), Look at the Harlequins! (1974). Among his non-fiction works, his autobiography Speak, Memory (1951) and literary essays such as Nikolai Gogol (1944) or his courses on European literature, on Don Quixote or on Russian literature stand out. In 1961, he moved to Switzerland, where he died in 1977. In 2009, his son Dmitri agreed to the publication of his unfinished novel, The Original of Laura.

La narrativa de Navokov es algo indescriptible, está lleno de amor y de un estilo que lo caracteriza y lo distingue de cualquier otro autor con tematicas similares, a pesar de que la historia del libro es demasiado predesible y simple, es la manera en la que el autor describe cada escena lo que hizo que me enamorara de este libro, al final ni siquiera se si lo amo o es absurdo asi que es una excelente obra.
