Giuseppe Cesare Abba Nacque in Cairo Montenotte il 6 ottobre 1838, e visse, come tutti i ragazzi di quei tempi, fino agli otto o nove anni, con poco tormento di scuola (presso le scuole comunali "del Ghetto"). A dodici anni, preparato, come si soleva allora, alla testa, perché il corpo era già abbastanza saldo, entrò dagli Scolopi di Carcare, in quel Collegio dove gli entusiasmi del 1848 erano ancora vivissimi, specie nel padre Atanasio Canata, grande svegliatore di ingegni e di cuori, come erano stati tra gli Scolopi di Savona i padri Pizzorno e Faà di Bruno
