Synopsis "Riverside Man"

Eugene DeMaio has been dead since 2010, which does not stop him from keeping accounts. From the far side of the Colorado River, he tells the story of a stretch of Arizona-Nevada desert that was a bait shop, a failing motel, and a dock that wasn't a dock when Donavan Doyle banked a Cessna over it one clear morning in April of 1964. Doyle drove down to the location on a Tuesday in October, and paid two hundred and fifty thousand in cash for a piece of nothing. What he built on it became a casino, then a town, then a town with his name on it.Gene met him in 1968 and spent the next decades watching the city grow. Riverside Man is a book about building something in a place that didn't ask for it, and about the far harder work of not letting go of it. It is a book about the accounting that never gets settled in time: the debts paid in secret and a grandson who came back to the river to find out whether the place still remains.
