Un artista visual y un músico dan título al nuevo libro de Mario Verdugo: robert smithson & robert smith. Ambos nombres propios adquieren aquí significados imprevistos; como dice uno de ellos en el epígrafe: “un lugar puede representar otro lugar que no se le parece”. Lo anterior entrega pistas sobre el trabajo formal que realiza el autor, basado en la repetición casi geométrica de distintas estructuras. En mencionado, veintiún personajes laterales o secundarios —un baterista que se fue justo antes del éxito del grupo, un deportista opacado por un equipo de estrellas, un científico que no patentó sus conclusiones a tiempo— buscan reivindicar su importancia en logros más bien peregrinos. Luego, en la sección titulada bretaña, alguien registra las maniobras que se ejecutan en una metrópoli abstrusa, entre minibodegas, salas de eventos o quinchos. Y en p300, la parte final, quien habla es un sujeto algo descontrolado (¿robot, alienígena, ángel exteminador?) que interpela a sus fantasmales “compañeros” con la sabiduría que le confiere “todo un milenio sin sexo”. La sátira y el extrañamiento confabulan en este libro, cuyos poemas revisan meticulosamente diversas membranas de la realidad.
