Synopsis "Rubens's Workshop"

Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Rubens' Workshop, held at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, from October 15, 2024, to February 16, 2025.

In past centuries, most European painters worked in teams consisting of a master and a variable number of collaborators. This volume focuses on one of the most prolific and successful: the workshop led in Antwerp by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640). From it emerged paintings entirely by his hand (the most valued by the artist himself and his contemporaries) and others resulting from varying degrees of participation by workshop members in the creative process.

The book explains the mechanics of the collaboration between the master and his assistants and analyzes the differences that allow us to distinguish Rubens' original works from those of his workshop.

Edited by Alejandro Vergara, Head of Conservation for Flemish Painting and Northern Schools. The book includes a conversation between the painter Jacobo Alcalde Gibert and Alejandro Vergara about Rubens' painting methods and his collaboration with assistants.

Alejandro Vergara Sharp holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts (New York University). He currently serves as Head of Conservation for Flemish Painting and Northern Schools at the Museo del Prado.

He has been a professor of art history at Columbia University (New York), the Institute of Fine Arts (New York University), and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), among other institutions. He was also a Getty Scholar at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California.
