Un vieux citoyen romain s'est ruiné par générosité pour ses amis. Il a dû s'exiler à cause de sa grande pauvreté et vit maintenant très simplement en bord de mer avec sa femme et ses esclaves.Sa fille, Palestra, lui a été enlevée alors qu'elle était toute petite et comme il n'a pas d'autres enfants, il est désormais sans héritier.Par ailleurs, le leno (marchand d'esclave) qui a acheté Palestra a été victime d'un naufrage, où il a tout perdu, y compris la jeune fille et sa servante. La cassette qui contenait les jouets et les objets permettant la reconnaissance de la jeune fille par ses parents a également été perdue dans le naufrage...
